Stardew Valley Combat Skill Guide

Combat is the skill you level by killing monsters in the Mines, Skull Cavern, and the Volcano Dungeon. It uses the standard skill curve, so level 10 arrives at 15,000 total Combat XP, and it is the only skill whose main reward is survivability rather than a tool or a crop.

Health does not increase evenly. Levels 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 each add 5 maximum health, but levels 5 and 10 add none. Fighter (+15 HP) and Defender (+25 HP) are the only ways to gain health at those two level-ups, which is why a level 10 combat build without them caps lower than the level number suggests.

The Fighter versus Scout choice at level 5 is the one real decision. Fighter adds 10% damage to every hit and +15 HP, then branches into Brute (a further 15% damage, multiplied rather than added) or Defender (+25 HP). Scout multiplies critical chance by 1.5 instead of adding a flat amount, then branches into Acrobat (special-move cooldown halved) or Desperado (critical hits deal double damage).

Experience per kill varies far more than players expect. A Cave Fly is worth 10 Combat XP, a Serpent in the Skull Cavern is worth 20, and a Putrid Ghost is worth 25, while a Bug is worth 1. Monsters killed on the Farm give only one third of the normal amount. Reading a Combat Quarterly or Book of Stars grants a flat 250 Combat XP, which is roughly the same as twelve Serpents.

For the fastest levels, farm dense high-value rooms rather than wandering: 20-25 XP monsters such as Serpents, Iridium Bats, Mummies, and Putrid Ghosts beat clearing weak slimes, and it is far more efficient than slowly grinding floors with a weak weapon. Bring a weapon that matches your level, a stack of healing food, and a staircase or bomb route so a bad floor does not end the run.

Combat XP per level

Combat uses the standard skill curve, so level 10 is reached at 15,000 total Combat XP. The max health column counts only the health the skill itself grants: levels 5 and 10 add none.

Combat XP per monster

A monster kill is worth far more or less than players assume, so the fastest route is always the highest-XP monster you can kill safely. Reading a Combat Quarterly or Book of Stars grants a flat 250 Combat XP. Monsters killed on the Farm grant only one third of the normal amount.
