Visit Pelican Town on Spring 13 between 9am and 2pm. Buy Strawberry Seeds for 100g before starting the hunt: the festival ends after the hunt and you return home at 10pm.
In single-player, collect at least 9 eggs in 50 seconds. Version 1.6 uses different egg layouts in odd and even years. The first win awards a Straw Hat; repeat wins award a Prize Ticket.

The Egg Hunt starts when you talk to Mayor Lewis
You have 50 seconds to find as many colored eggs as possible
Eggs are hidden behind buildings, trees, and bushes around the plaza
Single-player: collect 9 eggs to beat Abigail
Multiplayer targets: 6 eggs for 2 players, 5 for 3, or 4 for 4+; the highest qualifying score wins
Use the egg map for your year: odd and even years have different layouts in 1.6
Choose nearby eggs in a loop to reduce backtracking
Look around buildings and bushes, and avoid chasing a distant egg through obstacles
Aim for the winning threshold first, then use the remaining time for extra eggs
Do not follow another player into the same area in multiplayer
Water your crops before entering town; you return home at 10pm
Buy Strawberry Seeds before speaking to Lewis to start the hunt
With no growth bonuses, seeds planted and watered on Spring 13 yield harvests on Spring 21 and 25
Prepare watered planting tiles and save 100g for each Strawberry Seed you want
1st Place: Straw Hat (a unique cosmetic item)
Repeat wins in version 1.6: a Prize Ticket instead of the older 1,000g reward
There is no 500g consolation reward for losing the hunt
